Bonus Hunting: How Wagering Works and Where the Real Risks Are Hidden

A practical breakdown of bonus mechanics at bookmakers and casinos: wagering requirements, stake restrictions, restricted games, and strategies to avoid.

How wagering requirements work

A wagering requirement is a multiplier applied to the bonus amount that must be turned over before you can withdraw. For example, a 100-unit bonus with a 30x wager means placing 3,000 units in total bets. At a typical casino margin of 2–5%, this costs 60 to 150 units — meaning most of the bonus disappears in the playthrough.

Some operators calculate the wager on bonus plus deposit combined. That fundamentally changes the maths: a 30x wager on 200 (deposit + bonus) equals 6,000 units of required action.

Restrictions and prohibited strategies

Almost all bonuses cap the maximum stake during playthrough — usually 5–10 units or 10–20% of the bonus. Bets above the cap can result in the entire bonus and any winnings from it being voided.

Commonly restricted: low-margin outcomes (odds below 1.50–1.75 at sportsbooks), specific casino games (blackjack, roulette, video poker), and combinations that involve hedging through a second account.

Where the main traps are

Bonus expiry. If you don't complete the wager within 7–14 days, the bonus and winnings are cancelled. This time pressure forces faster, less selective play.

Country and payment restrictions. Some bonuses are unavailable for specific countries or deposit methods — written in the small print. Accidentally breaching conditions gives the operator grounds to freeze a withdrawal.

Changing terms mid-playthrough. Legally, operators can update terms at any time, making some bonus offers a significant risk.

When a bonus is genuinely worth it

A no-wager bonus or one with a wager below 5x is rare but does appear at newer operators looking to acquire players. A free bet without conversion is worth roughly 50–60% of its face value when hedged correctly.

Before claiming any bonus, calculate the real cost: how much you need to wager, what margin applies on permitted markets, and whether there are post-playthrough withdrawal restrictions. If the maths don't work — play without the bonus.
